Returning to ActivityAfter a hospital stay, you may be anxious to get back to your regular activities. But certain physical activitiesmay be restricted for the first couple of weeks, or until your follow-up appointment. These will be listed on yourdischarge plan.Heavy lifting, pushing and pulling heavy objects, lawn care and some sports may be restricted.Ask your healthcare team when you will be able to start doing these things again.When you first get home, rest. Your body is healing. Don’t overdo it.Get a good night’s sleep every night. You need energy to heal.As you get stronger, follow your healthcare team’s instructions on steadily increasing the amount of activity youdo. Take short walks, do minor household chores or repairs and light computer work.If there are any activities you want to do, but aren’t sure whether they are safe or not, talk to your healthcareprovider. It is better to be confident you are doing activities that will help your recovery.Your Discharge Plan may also include specific exercises designed to help your recovery. If so, review theseexercises before you leave the hospital. Make sure you are doing them correctly to avoid injury.And balance any activity you do with rest. Your body is healing.
