Back Health: How to Turn Safely

Although your spine and the muscles that support it are meant to be flexible, it's important not to twist the spine when you're turning. Instead, take steps into the direction of the turn, to prevent injury. Here are some tips for keeping your back safe while standing and turning:

  • When turning, remember to keep your belly muscles tightened.

  • Move your feet first and then turn hips and shoulders together in 1 motion.

  • Take small steps when turning and then step forward to complete the turn.
